“I think he is just crying out for attention Mr. Granger. Maybe you should take notice in him and make sure he is alright.”
“My son is tough thanks to me,” he snapped. “His mother babies him too damn much.”
“That may be, but children break.”
He turned towards her and eyed her. “Come to my office and we will talk there.”
Following him he shut his office door behind them and she heard the door lock. Turning towards him he gestured for her to take a seat. “Now what else can I be doing for that son of mine? I mean he never listens so I have no other choice but to parent him the way I do. His mother doesn’t do shit on the other hand.”
“Be his father, but also be his friend. He just seems like he needs someone to listen to him. I think that there is more going on with him then just the divorce. So just be there for him and allow him to talk. Get him comfortable.”
He thought on it for a moment and turned over towards her. “You’re mighty young to be giving me advice like this. What experience do you have?”
She smiled lightly. “It isn’t experience Mr. Granger – I just understand.”
“Alright then, I’ll go ahead and try for him.”
Both of them got up to leave. Opening the classroom door she walked out. She saw Carson standing there with that look about him. – She had only seen it once before when his father passed away.
Hastening her pace she was standing there with him. “What’s wrong?”
“Dennis got out earlier today – and he took Parker.”
She felt as her heart plummeted and shattered. Her baby was gone. A primal instinct came out of her and she allowed it to take control of her entire body. “When?”
“Just a few hours ago,” he began. “My mom is in the hospital. She just woke up.”
She pushed past him and he grabbed out at her. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“I am going to get my child back.”
“The police are doing that.”
“The police aren’t the mother. I have those instincts in me – they do not. I’ll find my son before they do.”
Stalking off she felt Carson at her side.
As they got into the car was when Carson looked at her. “Amanda I need to admit something to you.”
She rose her eyebrow and he spoke. “I have been fooling around with Valerie.”
“I can’t imagine why.”
“I don’t think we should get married.”
Turning towards him she shook her head. “Whatever you want Carson.”
“What? Why are you so hurt about that?”
“Maybe because despite everything I love you in a way I could never love anyone else. And maybe because if you want to explore other women’s anatomy I don’t mind. Maybe I want to join you in that as well.”
“Seriously?”
She nodded and got out of the parking lot. Making her way to the police department she quickly got out and made her way into the station. Jeremy was there talking to a few of the neighbors and then he walked over towards them.
“We don’t have anything,” he began.
“You know who took him,” she snapped. “You know where that idiot lives. So why the hell can’t you go get your stupid warrant and go get my son!”
“Because the judge hasn’t allowed it yet,” he countered darkly. “There isn’t enough evidence pointing to Dennis. He got out at noon the abduction happened at 12:45. We don’t think it is enough time for him to get everything he needed.”
“Oh so if I arrived at Dennis’s house and the cops got in the house 30 seconds later is that enough time for me to murder him?”
“We are trying Amanda.”
“Bull shit! This isn’t trying! This is tell me the story of what you did this afternoon. You all know as well as I do that Dennis is the only one who would ever want Parker. After that stupid bitch told him that he was the father he was trying to get involved.”
Taking a moment to think she nodded. “I’ve got to go.”
“If you know where he is you need to tell us!”
“No. Because you will need to get a warrant because if you go there before hand the entire case can be tossed out.”
Turning towards Carson he nodded. She knew he was on the same page as she was. Rushing back outside the rain clouds covered the sky and soon it began to pour. She stopped two houses away from Janice’s and she turned everything off.
“Carson you are the legal guardian of my son. If anything were to happen to me now, or ever, you will be responsible for him.”
“I will do anything for our son – and Amanda I am sorry that I have been ignoring you.”
“It doesn’t bother me, but try not to from now on.”
Holding her hand he squeezed it and she was ready. Carson was the first to get out, and as he did she opened the middle console and pulled out her gun. Getting out as well they went over and there was only one light on.
Getting underneath the window they heard a heated argument inside.
“You told me you would help get my son back!”
“I did,” she said. “But kidnapping wasn’t part of the agreement. He may be your son, but what you did was wrong and against the law.”
“Oh hell! That bitch would never let me near him. I deserve to be part of my son’s life.”
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have cheated on her! God only knows that I was fooling around with you with her. And I was going to have your baby too. I killed it though! Because you left with that slut! But Amanda kept her baby and everyone is always so fascinated by her.”
“I’ve never loved her! She was just easy and it was easy to manipulate her as well.”
She felt the anger come out of her and she was going to kill him. Kill him for making her believe she was special, for telling her all of those things. He never loved her, but she had been a fool and loved him.
That was when she heard Parker crying. “That damn kid! I say we shut him up permanently.”
“Then what was the point of kidnapping him?”
“To hurt Amanda because she doesn’t deserve happiness.”
Getting up she burst through the door and slapped Janice across the face. Dennis was standing there with a crow bar and he shook his head. “You stupid bitch – do you honestly think that you can come in here and pull this? The cops will launch an investigation about everything and during that time they will have your precious son in a foster home.”
“At least he’d be far away from you – especially seeing as how you will be six feet under.”
“So you’d really kill me? That’s hysterical because you never had it in you.”
Pulling out her gun she saw that fear come into his eyes. Carson came in behind her and he went to get Parker. As he picked him up he looked to Amanda. “Don’t do it Mandy. He isn’t worth a death sentence.”
Quickly she made her way towards him and hit him with the barrel of the gun. He fell to the ground and she got on her cell phone. Calling the cops she didn’t care if her son would be in the foster system until this was cleared up. At least he was away from that bastard.
She waited for the police to arrive and when they did they walked in and documented and took pictures. She watched as Jeremy had to take Parker and she attempted to keep her composure. She wanted to cry, but she couldn’t. She was too numb and this was all she could do. Holding he head up high she allowed them to take her away from the house and she began to feel weak. She was tired and numb. Looking to Carson he gave her a reassuring look, and she felt slightly better.

A year had passed them by and everything that had happened then was a distant memory. Parker was nearly two years old now and he was as energetic as any child. Her hands were on her growing belly and she watched as Carson chased their son around with a squirt gun.
“Daddy stop,” Parker giggled.
Carson picked him up and threw him over his shoulder. Carrying him towards her he put him down and he ra
n over towards Amanda. “Mommy what is our baby doing?”
Parker climbed to her lap and she took his hand. His twin brother and sister were having what felt like a boxing match. She smiled as she watched him light up and he looked over to his father. She and Carson were married and they had been faithful ever since she became pregnant.
“So how do you like it here?”
She looked around and smiled. “It is perfect.”
They had followed Bonnie out to Florida when she officially retired. Bonnie was beginning to lose her memory and they all bought a house together to keep an eye on her. Carson was making enough money to support them so she didn’t have to go to work. But she wanted to – however her doctor wanted her to stay bed ridden. She was having complications with the twins and she still hadn’t told Carson.
All of them got up and were heading into the house. Bonnie was sitting on the couch watching television and she looked up to them. She was beginning to forget who they were as well. She wasn’t old enough to get Alzheimer’s – or so they had thought – and Amanda didn’t want to lose her either.
Parker walked up towards her and held her hand. “I love you grandma.”
Sitting on the couch next to her Amanda smiled. Their son was amazing and she loved him so much. Dennis was not allowed anywhere near him – and he didn’t even know where they had moved to. Everything was getting better for them and that was when Carson gestured for her to follow him.
Walking to the back porch he folded his arms over his chest and looked at her. “Dr. Vincent called and left a message this morning. He wants you to go back in so he can check in on you and the complications that you are having.”
Her heart sank and she knew she could no longer keep it a secret from him. “Fine – I’ve been having a terrible pregnancy. I just couldn’t tell you Carson. You have so much going on in your life – who am I to add another thing onto the pile?”
“You are my wife and the mother of my children. I could care less if the sky is falling – if something is wrong you have to tell me. How am I supposed to be there for you when you won’t even allow me that much? Those complications you are having put you and our children at risk. I honestly don’t think Parker wants to go the rest of his life without his mother. I know I sure as hell don’t want to lose you.”
She looked down to the ground and bit her upper lip. “Fine, you have a point. I will be open about the pregnancy and other things that are going on. – And these complications are normal.”
“Really now? Then tell me what they are.”
“I have a heart murmur and I have been having bleeding. Not just a little bit – a lot a bit.”
“And you never told me because you thought I’d freak out?”
All she could do was nod. “Amanda I am here for you a hundred percent of the time. Even if it seems that I cannot help you in certain situations you have to know I can. You are important to me and if there is something I can do to help you I will do so.”
“Look, I am sorry for not telling you. You have so much going on right now Carson.”
“Well if I lost you then my world would shatter. You need to be open about this pregnancy that way I can determine what is going to happen.”
“Well what exactly do you want to know?”
“If it comes down to saving you or the babies which would you rather?”
Pausing she wasn’t expecting this question. Looking down to her pregnant belly she knew her answer. “I would want my babies to live.”
He nodded. “See I would have saved you instead.”
“Why?”
“Because we already have a son and he is going to need his mother!”
“These babies deserve a life too! I have been carrying them for seven months and they deserve to live. Parker will always have you.”
“Every child needs a mother! Every single one of them. There are mothers out there who don’t give a damn about their child, and those children suffer. You can give our son something I never can – and don’t ask me to explain it because I don’t know how to. But mothers have something fathers don’t. Our son is going to need you Amanda.”
“Why are we even talking about this? This will never happen. I will be fine Carson.”
He made a quick movement and was kissing her more passionately then he had in a while. Kissing him back they pulled away slowly. “I love you Amanda and I never want to lose you.”
“You’ll never lose me Carson. Never, and none of our children will.”
Chapter 9
Waking in the middle of the night their white bed sheets were covered in blood. “Carson,” she said shaking him awake. “We need to get to the hospital right now.”
He shot out of his slumber and saw the blood on the sheets. Quickly he grabbed a bag they had prepared and he helped her get out of bed. Walking her down the stairs he got the car ready and rushed back inside to get Parker.
“Daddy what’s going on?”
“Mommy needs to go to the hospital and we need to go with her.”
He nodded and was still half asleep. Putting him in his car-seat he quickly got onto the road and was heading to the hospital. Looking over towards Amanda she was closing her eyes and making that face. He knew she was in pain and she refused to make it known.
Getting onto the main road it was two in the morning and barely anyone was on the streets. Pulling into the hospital he parked and he got Parker and Amanda out of the car. Getting into the building the lady behind the desk looked at them and got on the intercom. “Would Dr. Morrison please come to the ER. Dr. Morrison to the ER.”
She quickly got a wheelchair and helped Amanda get situated. That was when a woman no older than them walked out. Her brown hair was tied back and when she looked at Amanda she quickly admitted her and they were heading towards the surgery ward.
“Why is she going there,” he asked with Parker in his arms.
“She is losing too much blood,” one of the nurses said. “She need to have a C-Section.”
“Does she have any wishes?”
“She wants the babies to live,” he said and they quickly brought her into a room. One of the nurses stayed behind and looked at him.
“They are going to attempt to save mother and children. Don’t worry – Dr. Morrison is the best.”
Sitting down out in the hall Parker was asleep in his arms. He never asked God for much, but he was praying for Amanda to be okay. That was all he wanted was for her – and their babies – to be okay.
§
Hours seemed to pass and that was when Dr. Morrison walked out of the room. Removing her mask she looked to him and spoke. “All of them are alright. Your wife is going to be moved to the ICU and your children are going to be put under observation. All of them have a high rate of survival.”
“When can I see Amanda?”
“In a few hours when she wakes up – my suggestion is for you to go home with your son and get some rest.”
He nodded and got to his feet. Parker was slightly awake and he saw his eyes open. “Where is mommy?”
“Mommy is okay,” he said. “Mommy just had your brother and sister.”
Parker’s eyes lit up and he smiled slightly. He felt the weariness take its toll on his body and he held his son in his arms.
They had arrived home and he had fallen asleep in Parker’s bedroom. He stirred with his phone going off. “Hello,” he said.
“Hi, this is Jenna Howe, and I am just calling to inform you that your wife is awake. She is in room 110.”
Hanging up the phone he saw Parker was wide awake. “Do you want to go see mommy?”
He nodded and they got up. His mother was sitting on the couch and she looked at him. “Mom, would you like to go to the hospital with me? Amanda just had the twins.”
She nodded and he made the drive once more.
Chapter 10
Amanda never felt this pain before. Her entire torso had been cut open and it hurt just to breathe deeply. That was when Carso
n entered with Bonnie and Parker. No one had yet to come in and tell her if her babies were okay. That was when Carson gave her that look and she knew they were okay.
Sitting down besides her she felt his warmth and when Parker curled up underneath her arm she knew that nothing was going to go wrong. Bonnie looked slightly disoriented, but she was seeing everything more clearly than she was early.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I just got butchered – they have me morphine and I just passed out. I don’t remember much of what happened.”
“Well you did just fine. The babies are healthy. I haven’t seen them yet – but for being premature they are fine.”
That was when a nurse entered the room. “Would you like to see them?”
Nodding she brought in a wheelchair and they followed the nurse. “Your son isn’t allowed in.”
Looking at Parker he didn’t seem to understand. “I’ll stay out here with him,” said Bonnie.
Going into the unit they saw the twins in there. They were so small – much smaller than Parker was when he was born. “Your son is five pounds six ounces and your daughter is four pounds nine ounces. For now they are just under observation, but they should be able to go home when you recover.”
Amanda looked to Carson and saw his eyes look fondly at their children. He was giving them the same look he gave Parker. “What are we going to name them? I know we’ve talked about it but we never agreed.”
“How about we name the boy Hunter James,” began Carson.
“And the girl Jodi Marie,” finished Amanda.
He nodded and held her hand firmly. Everything was going wonderfully, and Amanda felt as if nothing could go wrong.
§
It had been a month and the twins were finally sleeping through the night. Getting up Amanda walked into the hallway and saw Parker sitting outside the twin’s bedroom. “What are you doing out here kiddo?”
“I am protecting them from the monsters.”
Sitting besides her son she nestled him in her arms. Kissing his head she spoke softly. “Maybe you should get some sleep sweetie. I am sure the monsters won’t hurt them.”
Getting to her feet he was still in her arms. “They better not.”
